Acting Globally in Education, Research, Innovation and Outreach to Build Capacity
The Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for Agricultural and Life Sciences (GCHERA) is a global network of national and regional Higher Education Associations. GCHERA’s mission is to
- encourage mutual understanding and global co-operation among higher education associations and their constituent member universities
- provide leadership in education, research, innovation and outreach in agricultural and life sciences
- be a catalyst for the sharing and adoption of best practices across its membership
The GCHERA Steering Committee participates in global forums to contribute the views of the global higher education community in addressing the global challenges facing agriculture, food and natural resource management systems in 21st C, and supports GCHERA’s members in addressing these challenges.
GCHERA is a not for profit organisation registered in France at the office of INRA, Paris.
This Confederation was first conceived as the Global Consortium of Higher Education and Research for Agriculture (GCHERA) in 1998 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of National Agrarian University, Ukraine (now the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine) as a consortium of individual universities.
Between 1999 and 2011 seven global conferences were held.
At the Conference in 2011, upon the recommendation of the GCHERA Executive Committee members assembled, the GCHERA General Assembly approved the reorganization of GCHERA. GCHERA evolved into a Confederation for global higher education associations for the agricultural and life sciences as its members, rather than individual universities. GCHERA is now governed by a General Assembly representative of those associations. The Statutes of the new Confederation were approved at the GCHERA General Assembly on 28 October 2012 in Punta del Este, Uruguay and have been subsequently updated.
